Shahroudi's Announcement on Serial Murders, Good News for Iranian Nation
November 22, 2000 - 0:0
Head of the Judiciary Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, speaking at a gathering in Isfahan on Monday, said that the flaws that previously existed in the serial murders case have now been eliminated, and that the case will soon be heard in the court.
The announcement by the Judiciary head was taken as good news by different social and political circles in this country.
The fact is that the Iranian people have been waiting for almost two years now to see the culprits stand trial for their heinous crimes.
Although there have been some delays in the hearing of this case, which has been described by Shahroudi as very complicated, the Iranian people, especially the relatives of the victims, are now very happy to hear that the legal proceedings regarding the case will soon get underway.
The Islamic Republic boasts the most secure society throughout the world.
Thus, when the serial murders took place in late 1998, the people were almost shocked by these incidents. The Iranians received another shock when they heard that some self-willed and rogue Information Ministry employees were behind the killings.
Given the sensitivity of the matter, the people expected the culprits to be put on trial soon. But unfortunately there were long delays in the investigation process, and at times the media reported that some suspects who had been under interrogation for a long while were later released due to the lack of enough evidence against them.
This gave rise to a wave of propaganda by some circles both inside and outside the country that accused the Judiciary of dragging its feet on the case. However, the recent announcement by Shahroudi restored the image of the Judiciary and frustrated such propaganda.
It also conveyed the message to the world that Iran is governed by the rule of law, and whoever undermines security in this country will be firmly treated, no matter what position he holds in this country.
